I found the right fit at Chukyo University
After serving in the United States military, stationed in Okinawa for three years, I became very interested in Japanese culture and the people. Browsing the internet looking for a university in Japan who accepts the GI Bill*, Chukyo University caught my attention as it offered exactly what I was looking for: a degree that provided an international environment where I could learn more about the world, and a solid Japanese language education.
Two semesters in, I’m not disappointed. My favorite classes are Japanese language classes, partly because for me this was one of the main reasons for studying at Chukyo, but also because I love reflecting on how my ability is improving over time. I put a lot of effort inside and outside the classroom, and I’m trying to make more local friends to practice my Japanese with.
I also enjoy Professor D’Angelo and Professor Esposito’s classes, especially his Global Peace and Security class because it challenges me the most in terms of thinking, and it covers real world events that are important. I wasn’t accustomed to reading the news, but now it’s part of my routine and I have become more critical when it comes to thinking about issues.
I’m still in my first year but just being surrounded by students from around the world has impacted my thought process and changed my perspective on certain topics.

My future is in Japan
Upon graduation, I see myself still in Japan, either pursuing a master’s degree or finding a job in a field of my interest – fitness, international travel, or health and wellness. I am also intrigued by teaching, something I got inspired by my Japanese language professors at Chukyo. I would like to teach English like they are teaching me Japanese. A perfect fit would be a company that would allow me to work and teach.
As someone with prior work experience, I know that the job you have seriously impacts your lifestyle, overall happiness, and personal identity. I want to really find something I can enjoy.

Message for Prospective Students
Take advantage of the international environment at Chukyo University and make many friends from different countries. Always try to have a curious and open mind when listening to others. Above all, whatever you do in your life, do it seriously.
